Stoke is an English city located between Birmingham and Manchester. It has a small network of public transport but availability is sometimes dependent on demand and weather conditions.
Things to see and do in Stoke
The one thing this city is very well-known for it its pottery industry, which explains why it is also referred to as The Potteries. The industry itself is no longer in full flourish owing to strong competition from cheaper foreign imports, but some of the best manufacturers are still located here with their headquarters as well as factory shops all over the city, such as the Potteries Shopping Centre and Wedgwood.
One location you must visit to indulge in this special pottery experience is Gladstone Pottery Museum, where the entire family can come together to look into the depth of the industry. Many activities are carried out here and the bottle kilns of the city can also be seen. Also in a similar vein in Burleigh, which is one of the few family-run Victorian potteries.
Make a trip to the Trentham Gardens which are easily approachable from the city centre via bus. This is basically a very large park open to the public, although an admission fee is payable, but it is well worth it as there is much to see and do within the parameters of the park such as an adventure playground for children as well as a petting zoo. You can also rent boats for the huge lakes or even jet-skis, although these features do depend on the weather at the time. Paying an additional admission fee will entitle you to enter and fully enjoy the Monkey Forest, where there are free-ranging Barbary macaques, especially loved by children.
No trip to Stoke is complete without a visit to the City Museum and Art Gallery where one of the finest ceramics collections has been set up. There is also a preserved Spitfire which has been maintained to commemorate its designer who was from the city of Stoke itself, this being Reginald Mitchell.
